Airsoft Guns: AK, M4, G36, AEG and CO2 – How to Choose?
Working in the field of airsoft guns, we understand well that choosing the right airsoft gun model can be a challenging task—especially for beginner players looking to make their first purchase. With so many different types of airsoft guns, each offering unique features, it can be difficult to decide which one best suits your needs. In this article, we will discuss the various types of airsoft guns, their advantages and disadvantages, and help you make an informed decision when choosing the most suitable model.
Main types of airsoft guns:
Spring powered airsoft guns - these are the mechanically simplest guns and are often chosen by beginners. Such models can be found in categories like pistols, shotgun or sniper rifles. They operate using a mechanical spring that needs to be cocked before each shot. Although these airsoft guns do not have an automatic mode, their advantages are reliability, lower cost, and simplicity. They are ideal for target shooting or playing at short distances. Additionally, they function even in winter conditions, when temperatures drop below freezing.
Advantages:
- Lower cost – a great choice for beginners.
- Easy maintenance – no gas or batteries needed.
- Durability – fewer moving parts.
- Can still operate at low temperatures.
Disadvantages:
- One shot per reload – not ideal for intense airsoft battles.
Electric Airsoft Guns (AEG)
These are the most popular airsoft guns worldwide. They run on batteries and feature both semi-automatic and full-automatic firing modes. Electric rifles are known for high rate of fire, stability, and upgradeability. Popular models include AK, M4, MP5, G36, SCAR, and HK416, as well as WWII replicas and machine guns. Many AEGs have metal bodies, adjustable stocks, high-speed motors, Picatinny/MLOK/Keymod rails, and MOSFET systems.

Advantages:
- Automatic fire mode – ideal for active airsoft combat.
- Large variety of models and manufacturers.
- Upgradeable by changing internal parts.
- Usable in both warm and cold seasons.
Disadvantages:
- Requires battery and charger.
Gas Airsoft Guns
These guns operate using gas (CO2 or Green Gas) and are known for realism, especially with the blowback system that mimics recoil. This category includes gas blowback rifles (GBBR), Green Gas pistols, and CO2 pistols.

Advantages:
- Highly realistic operation and construction.
- Great as secondary weapons (e.g. pistols paired with AEG rifles).
- Blowback adds extra shooting experience.
Disadvantages:
- Needs regular gas refills.
- Not suitable for winter outdoor use.
- Requires more maintenance.
When choosing the right airsoft gun, consider your personal needs. For beginners, electric AEG rifles are usually recommended. Later, for more realism, consider CO2 or Green Gas pistols.
